What Size Rug Goes Under a Bed?

A Comprehensive Guide to Choosing the Perfect Rug
Meta Title: Choosing the Right Rug Size for Your Bedroom: A Guide
Meta Description: Learn how to choose the perfect rug size for your bedroom, including tips on measuring, rug styles, and maintenance.
My husband didn’t want a wood floor in our bedroom because he didn’t want an “area rug” that would go over the wood floor under and around the bed. He wanted a soft warm surface for his bare feet to land when he stepped out of bed in the morning and wanted to keep the wall-to-wall carpet. I couldn’t quite understand this reasoning since I knew he liked the look of wood floors. I tried to explain to him that an area rug would be soft and warm, too. I just couldn’t wrap my head around his reasoning until I heard him add… “not the area rugs you like”. Which made me laugh… he was right. 🙂 He was thinking the only kind of area rug I would want for under the bed would be a natural seagrass rug that has a hard textured surface. I have one in the living room and in our previous house, in the dining room and my studi office . He is not a fan of these rugs. I would have liked a seagrass area rug in the bedroom since I like the easy breezy casual feel it adds to a room and would go well with my White Pom-Pom Bed Skirt. But there are many other rugs that I like and I began a quest to find a large area rug that would make us both happy.
What Size Rug Fits Under a King Size Bed?
Choosing the right rug size for your bedroom can be a daunting task, especially when you have a large king size bed. It’s not just about the size of the bed, but also the available space around it and the style of the rug. In this article, we’ll explore the different factors to consider when choosing a rug size for your bedroom, including the size of the bed, the shape of the room, and the style of the rug.
Factors to Consider When Choosing a Rug Size
1. Bed Size
The size of the bed is the most important factor to consider when choosing a rug size. A king size bed requires a larger rug to create a cohesive look and to provide a comfortable surface for walking around.
2. Room Shape
The shape of the room also plays a significant role in determining the rug size. A rectangular room can accommodate a larger rug, while a square room may require a smaller rug to avoid overwhelming the space.
3. Rug Style
The style of the rug is also an important consideration. A formal rug may require a larger rug to create a sense of grandeur, while a casual rug may work well with a smaller rug.
Measuring for the Perfect Rug Size

To choose the right rug size for your bedroom, you’ll need to measure the space around your bed and the room itself. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you measure for the perfect rug size:
Step 1: Measure the Bed
Measure the length and width of your bed to determine the minimum size of the rug that will fit under it.
Step 2: Measure the Room
Measure the length and width of the room to determine the maximum size of the rug that will fit in the space.
Step 3: Consider the Clearance
Consider the clearance between the bed and the walls, as well as the clearance between the bed and any furniture or fixtures.
Rug Size Guidelines
While there are no hard and fast rules for choosing a rug size, here are some general guidelines to keep in mind:
1. For a King Size Bed:
- A rug that is 8′ x 10′ or larger is recommended to create a cohesive look and provide a comfortable surface for walking around.
- A rug that is 9′ x 14′ or larger can create a grand and formal look.
2. For a Queen Size Bed:
- A rug that is 6′ x 9′ or larger is recommended to create a cohesive look and provide a comfortable surface for walking around.
- A rug that is 8′ x 10′ or larger can create a more formal look.
3. For a Twin Size Bed:
- A rug that is 4′ x 6′ or larger is recommended to create a cohesive look and provide a comfortable surface for walking around.
- A rug that is 5′ x 7′ or larger can create a more formal look.
Choosing the Right Rug Style

In addition to choosing the right rug size, you’ll also want to consider the style of the rug. Here are some popular rug styles to consider:
1. Natural Fiber Rugs
Natural fiber rugs, such as seagrass or sisal, are a great choice for a casual and relaxed look.
2. Synthetic Rugs
Synthetic rugs, such as nylon or polyester, are a great choice for a durable and easy-to-clean look.
3. Wool Rugs
Wool rugs are a great choice for a warm and luxurious look.
Maintenance Tips
In addition to choosing the right rug size and style, you’ll also want to consider the maintenance of the rug. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
1. Vacuum Regularly
Vacuum your rug regularly to prevent dust and dirt from accumulating.
2. Spot Clean Stains
Spot clean stains as soon as they occur to prevent them from setting in.
3. Rotate the Rug
Rotate the rug every 6-12 months to prevent wear and tear.
Conclusion
Choosing the right rug size for your bedroom can be a daunting task, but by considering the size of the bed, the shape of the room, and the style of the rug, you can create a cohesive and comfortable look. Remember to measure the space around your bed and the room itself, and choose a rug style that fits your lifestyle and decorating style. With these tips and guidelines, you’ll be well on your way to choosing the perfect rug for your bedroom.
New Area Rug Tip
I want to share a tip about off-gassing your rugs before putting them in your home. It is important to open up a new rug outside in fresh air. Area rugs are loaded with chemicals, but they “off-gas” the most when first opened up. So I always make sure to unroll them outside and let them hang out for an hour or two to get rid of that chemical smell!
