This year, however, it became more than just a destination; it was a chance to reconnect with family, to create individual memories alongside my nephew Toby, and to witness a city through a fresh, slightly younger perspective. Toby and Anton are in different schools, a fact that meant this was their very first spring break trip together, and a particularly special one for me. The silver lining was that we could take one-on-one trips, which felt really special. It wasn’t about ticking off a list of tourist spots; it was about experiencing the city’s soul, one shared moment at a time. This trip, a carefully curated blend of planned adventures and spontaneous discoveries, offered a fascinating glimpse into family dynamics, technological innovation, and the enduring charm of a truly iconic place.

When planning a family trip, especially one with a slightly older child like Toby, the key is to find a balance between structured activities and open time. It’s incredibly easy to overschedule, leading to stressed-out kids and parents. My approach this year was deliberately loose, prioritizing quality time and allowing for flexibility. I started by talking to Toby about what he wanted to do, rather than imposing my own itinerary. He was particularly keen on seeing friends and playing games, which immediately shaped the initial plans. The focus on individual trips highlights the importance of quality time – a valuable lesson for any family, regardless of location.
Packing Strategically for San Francisco Weather
Packing for San Francisco can be tricky. The weather is notoriously unpredictable, shifting dramatically from sunshine to fog in a matter of hours. I decided on a minimalist, neutral color palette – primarily black, white, cream, gray, and blue – to maximize outfit combinations. This strategy significantly reduced the number of items I had to pack, making travel easier and more efficient. I packed layers: a light jacket, a fleece, and a waterproof shell. It’s a strategy that works for many trips, but it particularly paid off in San Francisco’s variable climate. A crucial item was a comfortable pair of walking shoes – we did A LOT of walking!
Balancing Interests: Toby vs. The Aunt
Navigating the interests of a teenager and an adult can be a challenge, but it’s a vital part of family relationships. Toby was obsessed with seeing his friends and playing Block Blast, while I was more interested in exploring historical sites and soaking up the city’s atmosphere. We found a sweet spot by alternating activities – a morning dedicated to Toby’s friends, followed by an afternoon exploring a museum or landmark. Also, we made sure to schedule plenty of downtime for chatting and catching up. The contrast between the planned activities and casual chats reveals a balance between structure and spontaneity.
Exploring San Francisco’s Iconic Landmarks
San Francisco is overflowing with iconic landmarks, each with its own unique story. We tackled a few of the must-sees, but also made time to wander off the beaten path. One of the highlights was undoubtedly Sutro Baths, the ruins of a former public indoor swimming pool complex. Standing on the cliffs, overlooking the Pacific Ocean, was breathtaking. The fresh ocean air felt so good on our faces. It’s a powerful reminder of the city’s rich history and its connection to the sea.
Sutro Baths: A Journey Through Time
The Sutro Baths represent a fascinating chapter in San Francisco’s history. Built in the late 19th century, it was once one of the largest indoor swimming pools in the world. The story behind its demolition is actually quite poignant, involving a landslide and the ambitious vision of Adolph Sutro. Exploring the ruins offered a tangible connection to the past—a stark contrast to the sleek, modern technology we encountered later in the trip. It’s a poignant reminder that even grand structures eventually succumb to the forces of nature.
Cable Cars and Lombard Street: A Visual Spectacle
No trip to San Francisco is complete without riding a cable car. The iconic vehicles, clinging to the steep hills, are a quintessential San Francisco experience. The queues can be long, but it’s worth the wait. We also made a pilgrimage to Lombard Street, the “most crooked street in the world,” a delightfully whimsical spectacle of flower-lined curves. Driving down it is an experience – it’s hard to capture in photos, but definitely something to witness firsthand. The sheer engineering involved in creating such a unique street is impressive.
The Ferry Building Marketplace: A Foodie’s Paradise
The Ferry Building Marketplace is a vibrant hub of local food vendors, artisan shops, and stunning waterfront views. It’s a fantastic place to grab a bite to eat, browse unique goods, and soak up the city’s lively atmosphere. We spent an afternoon sampling local cheeses, pastries, and fresh seafood. It’s a great example of how San Francisco embraces its local producers and celebrates its culinary heritage.
Tech and Transportation: A Glimpse into the Future
San Francisco is a city at the forefront of technological innovation, and our trip offered a few glimpses into the future. One of the most memorable experiences was taking a self-driving Waymo. Watching the steering wheel turn on its own is trippy at first but soon feels VERY safe – Waymos are basically like A+ students, who come to a full roll-back stop at every stop sign. The car stopped at every single stop sign, a testament to its advanced sensors and programming. Jeevan, a friend of my brother-in-law, shared that he’d seen a line of 10 Waymos patiently following a garbage truck up a hill without even attempting to go around, haha! It highlighted the potential of autonomous vehicles and their role in shaping the future of transportation.

Waymo: Autonomous Driving in Action
The Waymo experience was surprisingly smooth and intuitive. The car’s sensors and AI system navigated the city streets with remarkable precision. It’s a fascinating demonstration of how technology is transforming our daily lives. While fully autonomous vehicles are still under development, Waymo’s presence in San Francisco represents a significant step towards a future where driving is safer and more efficient. The focus on individual trips highlights the importance of quality time—a valuable lesson for any family, regardless of location.
Family Moments and Connections
Beyond the landmarks and the technological marvels, the most rewarding part of our trip was the time we spent together as a family. Playing Block Blast with my niece, sharing stories with cousins, and simply enjoying each other’s company created memories that will last a lifetime. The joy of seeing Toby connect with his friends was palpable, and the shared experiences strengthened our bonds. As soon as we arrived, we beelined to my sister Lucy’s house. How cute is she? My niece and I have a long tradition of playing Block Blast while chatting about everything/nothing in particular; so after taking an evening walk and eating pasta for dinner, we did just that.
The Warriors Game: A Shared Victory
We also attended a Warriors basketball game, a truly electric experience. The energy in the arena was infectious, and the atmosphere was incredible. The game was a nail-biter… …but they pulled off a 109-106 victory in the final minute. It was a fun way to experience a piece of San Francisco culture and create a shared memory.
Height Check and Family Traditions
One of the simplest, yet most meaningful moments was a quick height check with the cousins – a tradition that always brings a smile to my face. And as I took this photo, Dr. Kalanithi asked, “Are we the same?????” to which I replied, “Not even a little bit.” It’s these small, everyday moments that truly define a family vacation. Finally, we said goodbye and flew home, stepping over this dude’s foot every time we had to get up lol. It was such a joyous trip and we felt so, so lucky to be able to see everyone. California, many love you!
Looking Ahead: Reflections on Our San Francisco Trip
Our San Francisco trip was more than just a vacation; it was an opportunity to reconnect with family, explore a vibrant city, and create lasting memories. From the iconic landmarks to the innovative technology, San Francisco offered a diverse and engaging experience for everyone. As we reflect on our adventure, we realize that the most valuable takeaway wasn’t the sights we saw or the things we did, but the time we spent together. Where does your family live? Close by or far away? How do you stay in touch?
