Those signs should not be treated as proof that a workout is “working.”
A useful rule is to watch both the sensation and its effect on function. If pain makes you limp, change your stroke, protect one side, or lose control of a joint, continuing may shift stress to another area. Stop the activity and assess what happened. For weekend athletes, a basic program can emphasize squats or sit-to-stands, hinges, pushes, pulls, calf work, and trunk stability. Start with movements you can perform smoothly and progress resistance gradually.
Sport-specific control also matters. Runners benefit from single-leg strength and calf capacity. Court-sport athletes need controlled deceleration and direction changes. Swimmers need shoulder-blade and upper-back strength. A qualified trainer or physical therapist can adapt exercises around previous injuries or medical conditions.
Know the special rules for a possible concussion

The same is true for recreational competitors. If an injury removes running, cycling, or lifting from your week, the loss can affect mood and social connection as well as fitness. Maintain relationships, interests, and routines that are not dependent on performance. During recovery, stay connected to teammates, learn a new aspect of your sport, or choose safe activities approved by your clinician.
